Black Women In Business: Tomisin Smith

Welcome to the Black Women in Business series. Each week, I’m handing the mic over to some incredibly talented entrepreneurs and giving them the space to share their stories and what they've learned throughout their business journey.

Through this series, our intention is to highlight and amplify more Black voices and celebrate the powerful female CEOs, leaders and innovators we have in this space.

Meet Tomisin Smith

My name is Timothy and I own 26 Digital, a full-service social media agency. The agency is four years old now, but I have been working in social for around 10 years - and it has been a journey!

It's been a journey trying to break into the industry as a woman of colour, and as an immigrant, but it's it's been a learning curve that has that has made me into who I am today. And it has helped me to advocate better for women.

One thing about me is that in the social media space, once I see another Black Woman killing it, I'm going to hit follow. And the major reason for that is because there are not a lot of us currently in this industry. In comparison with our counterparts, it is difficult for us to get the opportunities we need, the support, we need, even to get clients. And this is because there is a stereotype that people of colour aren’t as good at their jobs, or that their services are mediocre, which is far from the truth I have.

Currently, in my agency, we only work with Black Woman businesses, and the level of excellence and quality that I have seen has made me so so so proud of my sisters, how far they have come, and how far we will go.

How to support Black creators all year round, not just during Black History Month

Supporting Black creators is not a February thing. It's not a June thing. It's not a during the Black Lives Matter events thing. It is a year-round thing. 365 days out of 365 days, you should be supporting Black creators.

One of the major reasons for this is that the scales are not balanced. As Black Women, we are not awarded or accorded equal opportunities as others.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT BLACK CREATORS:

  1. Share their art & bring more eyes to their content

  2. Engage with their content

  3. Give credit to the creator if you take inspiration from their content

  4. Buy from Black-owned businesses

  5. Collaborate with Black creators (& not just when you’re trying to show support for BLM)

  6. Use your platform for education and advocacy

Let this be the year that Black History Month is not just in February, but all year round.
