3 Ways Long-Form Content Will Transform Your Business

In this episode, we explore why you shouldn't rely solely on Instagram to market your business, the importance of long-form content and how to create an omnipresent marketing strategy to increase your online presence & consistently bring in quality leads.

LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED:

If you’re relying solely on Instagram and other forms of social media to grow your business, you’re playing a dangerous game

Now, don’t get me wrong, Instagram is an amazing tool that you can use to grow your business and reach more customers and clients. I mean, without Instagram, I wouldn’t have the business I have today and I’m such a huge advocate for it that I have a whole membership based solely on Instagram Stories.

That being said, I also recognise that at the end of the day, Instagram is rented land. You do not own your followers and you have no control over what happens to them, or the platform, in the future

It wasn't that long ago that Instagram, along with several other social media platforms, experienced a blackout meaning that millions of users around the world were unable to access their social accounts as usual.

While this was a great way to force us to take a break and get outside, it caused a lot of problems for business owners who'd built their business solely on Instagram. Glitches like this are just a reminder that we are not in control of these platforms. Literally anything could happen to them at any time.

What would you do if your Instagram account was hacked? What would you do if Instagram decides to delete your account and you're unable to recover it? I've heard plenty of horror stories over the past few years to know that this is a real possibility and has led to numerous business owners losing out on thousands of dollars in revenue because their account was there one day and gone the next…

And yes, you can always create a new account and begin building your audience up again, but what if one day, Instagram just didn't exist anymore? Anyone remember MySpace?

So I have a question for you to consider:

If you didn’t have Instagram anymore, would you still have a business? Or would your business die along with Instagram?

This is the question I asked myself back in 2021 and when I realised that Instagram dying would mean the death of my business as well, I quickly reevaluated my marketing strategy to make sure that my business would continue to thrive without social media, and I did this by prioritising long-form content on a platform that I actually owned!

What is long-form content?

Even if you’ve never created long-form content, you’ve definitely consumed it. And I know that because you’re reading this blog post right now.

Here are some examples of long-form content:

  • Blog posts

  • Podcast episodes

  • YouTube videos

  • FB or IG livestreams

If you’ve ever done any of the above, you have created long-form content.

Why you should be creating long-form content for your business.

It is my firm belief that every business owner should be creating long-form content for their business, and before you say that it’s too much work - hear me out!

If you go about this process the right way, you could actually end up spending less time creating content that performs even better than the content you’re creating right now… and that’s something we’re going to be diving into more in next weeks episode (so make sure you’re subscribed so you get the notification for that), but right now, let’s talk about what long-form content can do for your business.

1. YOU GET TO CREATE ONE PIECE OF CONTENT THAT LIVES ON FOR YEARS.

With the content you create on social media, you’re constantly battling the algorithms. As soon as you upload your content, it begins to die, and it typically only has a shelf life of around 24-48 hours. After that, you’ll be lucky if anyone sees that piece of content again.

It makes so much more sense to focus your time on creating a single piece of long-form content that your ideal client can continue to access and consume forever!

2. YOU CAN CREATE MULTIPLE PIECES OF CONTENT FROM ONE SINGLE PIECE OF CONTENT

Your long-form content becomes your core content piece. From that core content, you can then split it up into multiple pieces of content and repurpose it for other platforms.

So let’s say you create a blog post. From that blog post, you can then create…

  • 5-10 Pinterest graphics

  • Emails

  • Short-form Instagram captions

  • TikTok’s & Reels

  • & even more!

So, yes, it takes time to create that core content. But once you have it, you can create multiple pieces of content off the back of that so that it continues to live on forever, and you can do it in almost no time at all.

Or, even better, you could hire someone to repurpose that content for you so you don’t have to do anything at all! This is actually something that I help my clients with as their Content Repurposing Manager. Find out more here.

3. CREATING LONG-FORM CONTENT ALLOWS YOU TO SHOWCASE YOUR EXPERTISE

When we’re looking to buy a product or hire someone for a service, we are looking for evidence that the person we are buying from is an expert. And while you can get this across on social media, having a place for your prospects to go and consume your long-form content, such as a blog or podcast, is going to make that process so much quicker!

Particularly when it comes to podcasts, your audience are likely to sit and binge your episodes to learn from you if they find that they enjoy your content. This isn’t something people typically do with social media though. So having that place for them to go and essentially binge your content is the fastest way to build trust and ultimately convert that prospect into a client or customer.

I’ve had multiple clients tell me that after they found me, they binged my podcast, and then made the decision to hire me. So I am living proof that this works!

But ultimately, you should be creating long-form content because it will get you more of what you want in your business. You will get more visibility, you will have more authority and industry expertise, you will be able to build know/like/trust with your audience quicker and speed up that process from cold to warm to hot.
