Freebie Swaps: How To Get More Sign-Ups for Your Lead Magnet Organically

What is a freebie swap?

A freebie swap is what happens when two business owners get together and agree to cross-promote each other’s lead magnets. The overall goal of this strategy is to build your individual email lists with targeted subscribers. 

Essentially, you are partnering with another business owner who has a similar audience to your own, but isn’t in direct competition. Then, you are both writing an email about each other’s lead magnet and sending it to your lists to help each other grow.

Here’s an example:

A website designer might decide to partner with a copywriter for a freebie swap collaboration. These entrepreneurs both have a similar ideal client, but they help their clients with different things, which makes them the perfect fit to collaborate.

Let’s say the web designer has a free resource on how to DIY your business website using Squarespace, and the copywriter has a free template to help business owners write compelling sales copy. 

Those who are in the website designer’s world may have gotten the perfect website, but now they’re struggling to write their sales copy… and that’s something the website designer isn’t able to help with. So, by sharing the copywriter’s resource, they’re able to help their audience in another way, and vice versa.

Once they’ve agreed to collaborate, they’re both going to share each others lead magnets with their audience. Most of the time, this would take place via email, but it could also be a social media post, an Instagram Story, maybe even a podcast ad…

I do think that email is the best platform to conduct a freebie swap because you’re already on the platform that you want to promote and you know that anyone who signs up for your freebie after hearing about it from your collab partner is actively opening and reading their emails (so they will hopefully be engaged when they’re on your email list as well). Plus, it’s really easy for them to just click on the link, enter their information and head straight back into their inbox where your email will be waiting for them.

Why is a freebie swap a great strategy?

Now that you know what a freebie swap is, let’s talk about why it’s such a great strategy.

1. Email converts well

Email is one of the highest-converting marketing strategies. It’s been estimated that for every $1 you spend on email marketing, you’ll receive an average of $30 back. I can’t remember the exact statistics, but it was around that mark. This means that growing your email list is a top priority, and freebie swaps provide an easy and low-effort way to do that quickly.

2. Share extra value with your audience

It provides you with the opportunity to share extra value with your audience. They get to hear about a topic you don’t talk about yourself, but they may still be interested in, and so you give your audience a well-rounded experience.

3. Boost your credibility & expert status

When someone emails their audience about you and recommends your resource, there’s a built-in element of social proof. They’re essentially telling their audience that they trust you enough to recommend your business to them - and that is a big thing! So when people see this, they’ll be coming into your world already having established that trust in you, because someone they already trust has vouched for you.

How to conduct a freebie swap

If a freebie swap sounds like a collaboration that you would like to participate in to grow your email list, then I’m going to break down 4 steps you can take to bring this collab to life…

1.Find a business owner with a similar audience to your own and agree to collaborate on a freebie swap

2. Send each other the information needed to promote the lead magnets. This would include a mockup of the lead magnet, a description of the lead magnet, who it’s for, what it’ll help them achieve, and then the link to your opt-in page

3. Choose a date to share each other’s lead magnets. This doesn’t have to be the same date - one of you could share on the Monday and the other person on the Thursday if that works with your schedules, it just needs to be around a similar time.

4. Sit back, enjoy the sign-ups & let your automated email software do the nurturing for you
