Create pop-ups with ConvertBox (affiliate link)

I have come across so many business owners who have created a great lead magnet that they’ve shared on their website and in their Instagram bio, but then they’ve just left it… They don’t talk about it, they don’t share it after that first week they created it and put it out there… and it’s not really doing anything for them.

Your lead magnet is the entrance to your funnel. You need to be talking about it all the time! It needs to be plastered everywhere so that your ideal client can easily find it and sign up for it and enter the funnel that is going to convert them into a paying client or student.

Here are 7 ways and places to promote your lead magnet, build your email list and get more leads into your funnel.

1. Put your lead magnet on your website homepage.

Starting with the obvious, your homepage is a great place to put your freebie! This is where new people discovering you are likely to go, and they’ll often be looking for some way to dive deeper into your world. This is where having an enticing lead magnet is really beneficial.

If you have a resources page on your website as well, you can also link to your lead magnet here. Anyone who goes to a resources page is likely looking for things to sign up for, so don’t forget to use this real estate to promote your own lead magnet!

2. Use pop-ups to promote your lead magnet.

I know a lot of people feel some kind of way about pop-ups, but when done correctly, they can be really effective!

Most websites allow you to have an announcement bar, which is a non-intrusive promo strategy as it just sits as a little banner at the top of your website. This is a great place to promote your lead magnet.

And then you have the traditional pop-ups that come up on the screen while someone is browsing your website. I recently implemented this strategy myself, but I’m using a tool called ConvertBox (affiliate link) to do this because I love the way ConvertBox pop-ups work and the way you can design them to be non-obtrusive… which is traditionally the most annoying thing about pop-ups, right?

3. Put your lead magnet in your social media bios

Create a links page on your website and put this in your social media bios. Anyone who clicks on your website from your social media will be taken to a page that showcases your most important links, including the link to sign up for your lead magnet.

4. Put your lead magnet in your email signature

There are 2 ways you can utilise your email signature to promote your freebie.

1. Within your email marketing platform

When you send out a regular broadcast email, you could include the link to sign up for your lead magnet at the bottom of your emails as a P.S., or as some kind of signature sign-off. That way, anyone on your email list who hasn’t yet signed up for your lead magnet will be reminded about it and have the opportunity to grab it.

2. In your Gmail/Outlook email signature

When you send out regular emails (you know just from your regular Gmail account, or whatever you use) most business owners have an email signature, right?

You usually have a picture of yourself, your name, what you do and links to your website & other contact options. But below that, you could also put a link to your freebie! This is something most people don’t even think about, but it’s a great way to get some extra promotion in!

5. Promote your lead magnet on Pinterest

We often think of Pinterest as a place to promote blog posts, but it’s also a great way to promote your free resources. I am always creating pins for my lead magnets and sharing these on Pinterest, and I’ve seen a ton of sign-ups for that have come specifically from Pinterest (some of whom have gone on to convert into my paid offers as well).

Pinterest is such a powerful platform - it’s not something that will bring you results right away, but when you’re using it as a long-term strategy, it can generate traffic for years. I’m still seeing website traffic and lead magnet sign-ups from pins I created and published back in 2021… so I highly recommend creating pins that lead to your freebie.

6. Promote your lead magnet within your content

So many people will set up their lead magnets, put them on our website and other evergreen places and just let them sit there. But if you want people to sign up, you have to make them aware of your lead magnet! You have to talk about them consistently.

Sharing your lead magnet on Instagram

If you’re using Instagram, I want to encourage you to talk about your freebie on your Stories. If you create feed posts and Reels, talk about your lead magnet there as well! They don’t have to be posts entirely dedicated to your lead magnet, but at the end of your regular content (if it fits) direct people to go and get more value by signing up for your lead magnet!

Sharing your lead magnet on your podcast

If you have a podcast, talk about your lead magnet on there! If you’re talking about a topic that relates to your free resource, you could say something like “By the way, I have a resource that helps you with XYZ. Go to the show notes to grab it”.

Another way I love to utilise my podcast to promote my lead magnets is through podcast ads! You may think of podcast ads as a way to get paid to promote other people’s products and services, but it’s a great way to promote your own offers! Before I get into the main section of my podcast episode, after the intro, I’ll often run a pre-recorded ad that tells my listeners about my lead magnet. This is just a great, easy and evergreen way to give value to your listeners and get them to join your email list as well.

Sharing your lead magnet on your blog

If you have a blog, again, you can link to your lead magnet there when it relates to a topic you’re talking about. You could even create a form to sign up for your lead magnet directly within your blog posts so that they can enter their information right there and then.

7. Utilise collaborations to share your lead magnet

If you’re doing podcast interviews, most hosts will allow you to share a gift at the end of the episode. This gives you the perfect opportunity to pitch your lead magnet and encourage their listeners to come over and join your email list so that they can learn more about you.

This also applies to if you’re speaking in summits or giving a guest expert training inside of a free, or paid, community. 9 times out of 10, you will be allowed to share a free resource, so make sure you are taking advantage of that.

Another great way to utilise collaborations is through freebie swaps, which is where you team up with another business owner who has a similar audience to your own (but not competing) and you both share each other's lead magnets with your own lists.

Ultimately, if you want to get more people into your funnel, you need to be sharing about your lead magnet consistently! Treat it like it’s a paid offer. Because, at the end of the day, it’s what leads to your paid offer. It’s the first touchpoint.
